: : Blood Donation Requirements & Living in UK : :

I’ve had several comments about this and I get the feeling that they are starting to feel offended.

Reason for this is that a lot of hospitals are concern about the potential risk of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease a.k.a. Mad Cow Diseases. Outside of the UK, a lot of hospitals in various countries will actually turn down people who have lived in UK in the past 10 or so years. It’s a disease that may not appear until a few years down the road.

Actually, it’s not 10 years but rather since 1980 for at least 3 months stay in UK. There’s been reports about contaminated blood in blood banks so the hospitals are being more careful.

And for those who have commented, I’m assuming that you’re either living in UK already or have not donated blood outside of UK. Else, from the questionairre alone you will be filtered.

  1. Flipping ‘eck. Are people really complaining about this? I was a regular blood donor in the UK until I visited Asia. Now I visit Asia twice a year, I can’t donate at all. Whilst I’d love to, it’s not allowed. It doesn’t surprise me that it works the other way round too.

  2. It’s not just in Malaysia either that this is a requirement at blood donor centers, it’s the same in the US too.
