Thanks for the info. It is true that the current ruling was like that but in the past, it wasn’t always like that. The older establishments who received the halal certification/authorisation (or however you call it. someone please correct) did receive permission to display the words ‘Ditanggung Halal’ (Halal Certified) provided that the food served did not contact pork. It need not be that the Head Chef be a muslim as long as the establishment did not cook pork on the premises. I think it must have been in the last 10-20 years that the meaning of halal cooking was clarified i.e. certificates showing that the food served are slaughtered in the proper manner. I know that new establishments now need to have a Muslim as the Head Chef in order to obtain the permission to put up signage stating ‘Ditanggung Halal’ (Halal Certified). (Anyone else care to comment about this?)

I know that a lot of food lovers visit this site are from Kuching or are visitors to Kuching. Hence, I would put a note up about whether the establishment whether it’s Halal or not and leave it to the readers to decide what they want to do next.
