: : Jo’s Deli Bakery : :

Gosh! Found a little treasure trove here. Jo has put up a marvelous resource site on baking little goodness found in South East Asia. I suspect that she’s located in the Klang Valley as the addresses given on her resource page is located there. I’m late at finding this site, that’s for sure. However, better late than never!!

Now, to look around for a little electric oven! Still haven’t bought it yet. Haven’t decided whether to get a Microwave+Convection-Oven-Combination or buy both separately.

Still thinking about it. Any suggestions anyone?

: : A Fest : :

Helping out with the stage and logistics details for last nite’s company event was stressful with many problems along the way, one of them with me being sick for two days and leaving my collegue to arrange for everything else. At the end of it all, everyone pulled through and the show was really good. Managed to get away for a few minutes just before dinner time to take some pics of everyone. Then, I bumped into Pascale.

Pascale : Hey! Take some pictures of the food before everyone finishes it!

Wena : What now? Aiya! Too many ppl looking lah!

Pascale : Never mind! Just take just take!

So, we both walked down the buffet line to take some pictures.

Pineapple rice although they were a bit stingy with the pineapples though. Not enough of them in the entire dish.

Fried Beehoon was also served, Malay style. It was spicy and very tasty. I prefer to have Malay style fried beehoon rather than the Chinese version because of the different spices added to it.

Oh! Rendang rendang! Every Raya time, all Malaysian Chinese people go fanatic over this dish! I kid you not. Ask any Malaysian Chinese what kind of dish will he be wanting to eat during Raya time, he will most likely say this one. And this was nice although the beef wasn’t tender enough, it wasn’t too tough either. Went great with Lemang @ glutinuous rice cooked in bamboo.

A touch of Chinese added to the buffet spread : Roast Chicken. Ooh! Yummy. The pieces were also cut very generously, I must say.

We also had some great spring rolls, otherwise known as egg rolls in the USA. This version is slightly different as they did not use the usual mangkuang in it but rather used taugeh @ bean sprouts with cucumber.

Spaghetti bolognese and mixed vegetables. It was zapped up later by many many people. Believe me, it was eaten up totally.

On the left, we have the local eggplant curry cooked with dried beancurd and long beans. The local eggplant is actually very soft compared to the harder aubergine. On the right, is the latest food sensation to hit town in the past few years : fried sausage wrapped with bread. Very oily as the bread just soaks up too much oil. Believe me, it had more oil in it than the potato pancake.

Lemang! That’s on the left. On the right is ketupat but it has a different taste and texture compared to the lemang. I prefer the lemang compared to the ketupat. Both are eaten with satay and curry and RENDANG…

Now what is a fest without some satay? We had some beef and chicken satay, located on the upper left. Bottom left was the sinfully, wicked peanut sauce that goes with it. A good satay combination is always always ALWAYS dependant on this peanut sauce. The canned version of peanut sauce doesn’t even come close to the real thing. On the left we have some potato salad that testifies to the truth that Malaysian absolutely adores mayonnaise. Smothering the potatoes, that’s the way to go back it!

Fresh salad with mayonnaise and Thousand Island dressing on the side. Did I ever mention that Malaysians also love Thousand Island dressing? The fashion these days is to smother smother and cover the entire thing with the sauce!

Finally, the dessert corner! Fruits, layered cake, gelatin @ agar-agar, fruit cakes, butter cakes. Yum. It was a lot of eat, believe me.

So, that’s it for last night’s dinner! It was a crazy time with much laughter all around and everyone having a great time. Came back home tired and mindless after watching all the singing, dancing, shouting, clapping. Ah well. Back to work come Monday.

On another note, have to take more pictures of food over the weekend and Chinese New Year. Something is wrong with my camera. Yep, the click button has gotten less sensitive and it’s time to see if I can get her repaired. Luckily, it’s still under warranty so it isn’t too bad. So, it’s going to the shops to be check after CNY. Hopefully, I’ll get better service at SONY than this poor chap did with HP Malaysia.

Cheerio!

: : Babyeeee : :

It was a noisy early morning today with lightning flashing and thunder roaring so loudly that the house shook so hard, I stumbled out of bed in the dark to yank out the modem cord before the modem is pulverized by 10,000 gigawatts!

Woke up again much later to a steady rainpour and to the news from Renee that Deb and Tom has been blessed with a baby girl! Awww… isn’t she cute?

Deb maintains a food blog as well and was one of the earliest bloggers to link my site to hers. Her cooking skills are amazing and one can find many tips and goodies on her site. She’s also generous with her feedback and suggestions. Now, with the little one at hand, who knows what the two of them will be able to do together?

Well, Deb, since I’m too far away to give you a huge pot of kacangma, here is a picture of one! Made from chicken and herbs as well as rice wine, it helps to ease the pain after the childbirth and helps the mother to recover faster.

: : Ice-Cream : :

Well, my feet is aching and my head is starting to unravel. It was a long day but still fun at the end. Doing stage work and logistics is back-breaking but like my sis says, I like being involved. Now, at this moment, I just want some ice-cream to unwind.

One is the Magnolia GOTCHA! Soccerball ice-cream but I cannot remember what is the other ice-cream. Oh well. Grace will tell me soon enough! :p

: : A Pot of Gold : :

At local supermarket.

Granny : Come come lah! Wanna show you something!!

Wena : What what?

Granny : See see! A pot of gold! I wanna get one!

Wena : Wah! So nice one! What’s inside?

Granny : Dunno. Let’s ask!

Salesman : Ah, Auntie, you want to get one? This is what’s inside.

Wena : Only that ah? For RM9.90 somemore!

Salesman : For charity mah! RM1.00 goes to charity for dumb people?

(Took me awhile to realise that he meant for a charity organization that looks after mentally challenged children)

Granny : OKlah! I take one yeah!

Salesman : Thanks Auntie!

The box is from Eu Yan Sang where they have a small counter at Big Fresh Supermarket at Tabuan Jaya. It is now sitting in the living room next to the TV. Must be displayed prominently for all of Granny’s friends to see during CNY wor!

One thing about Eu Yan Sang, there sell bottled Tongkat Ali wines! Haha! Wanted to buy one for a friend who was getting married but his brother refuses to drive me to the nearest Eu Yan Sang shop in Ipoh to get it for him. Choi!

: : Sick at Home : :

Yesterday was spent at home, sleeping most of the time. Except for the times when I went downstairs to get more water or to go and see the doctor.

Granny was cutting some midin to be cook later but she cooked it with sambal belachan! Argh! Couldn’t eat it due to this horrid sore throat. Darn it!

Well, had this for breakfast after going to the doctor to get some medicine and an MC (Medical Chit) certifying that I need to take one day of sick leave. So, as a good little girl, I had to have something to eat first before taking any medicine. The only thing my stomach could hold down was a hot cup of Milo with some bread to dip it in. It was delicious as always! The bread is very very soft, bought from Mita Cake House. The only other bread that I do like is from the Fuji Bakery at the junction of Jalan Ong Tiang Swee and Rock Road. Very very soft bread without the salty preservative taste of Gardenia (which is severely OVERRATED!). Once you’ve tasted these bread, you will never touch Gardenia again. Come to think about it, Gardenia bread disappeared off the shelves of Kuching a couple of years ago. Good! Well, back to the bread from the two Kuching bakeries. Think the secret ingredient is milk which makes it extremely soft and the Fuji bread is slightly sweetish.

Going to the office today was a bad mistake. Due to the extreme coldness, I started off the day in a non-stop fit of coughing and breaking out into sweat because of the medicine and coughing. I got sympathy cries from a lot of people who said I should go back home and rest as well as to get better before CNY! Just before I left, Pascale gave me some biscuits as well as another collegue. Looks like JL is in town again, one of my vendors. Everytime he’s around, he’s either distributing biscuits or chocolates bought from the duty free shop at the airport. Then, someone just had to open up a packet of fried sotong coated with sugar and eat it in the office. The smell alone was enough to start my saliva production but with this sore throat, it was just not possible to eat it!

Anyway, took MC again today and slept the afternoon away. The cough is better now but will have another coughing fit tonight because it gets darn cold at nite in Kuching. Saw spoonfork doing an oliver twist on the previous posting. Aduh! Cook yourself lah! Or one of the readers will be more than willing to cook it for you? Perhaps fry or zain?

BTW, Shiewie, if you’re reading this, someone was doing a search for you and ended up at this blog. Wonder who’s got the hots for ya?

Live to Eat or Eat to Live? That is the question.
